Sugar Levels & Happiness Levels - Susmita Narayan

We are a nuclear family. My husband has always been in a front-end Sales job, and needs to travel frequently - literally 2 days a week with extended hours and lack of proper food and rest. Temperamentally, he tends to take things to heart. He is also always the fittest in the family, keeps to his ideal weight, never binges on food or drinks, wakes up early even on weekends, and hates to stay still at home. The only health issue we ever had was a slightly high Blood Pressure discovered during check-up for an insurance cover.n the new company's scheme forced him to do a full medical check-up. We were shocked to learn that his sugar levels were extremely high, and he had to start taking insulin.

Even before the shock was over, there began a whole new world of learning to continue living with diabetes. Travelling with insulin on international flights, finding the right break between meetings and trips to eat to avoid being low, finding that half-hour to walk at least 3 days in a week, trying to relax and slow down the pace of life...it was not easy. There were many colleagues and friends who were great support - they knew exactly when to stop during a meeting to have a snack, and what not to insist on eating, or what to cook for a Friday party. We discovered that health clinics were great for weight loss, but lacked the right expertise to advice for a diabetic. We learnt how difficult it is to carry even a bar of chocolate into a cinema hall - there is such less awareness that a diabetic can have a severe low and needs to be prepared for that. We realized no insurance company was willing to give him a cover, even at an increased premium value. I would keep awake until late nights to ensure that his flight has landed and he has reached the hotel room and has had a meal. My medicine guy became a friend - he now recognizes my voice on the phone for the refresh order of stock of medicines every thirty days. I remember a friend recommended a visit to a homeopath, another one sent us to a Buddhist doctor. The alternate medicines became too many and too complex to manage, but we remembered the Buddhist doctors statement...Diabetes is a disease of the mind.

Before we knew it, the whole family was suddenly healthier and happier. We went back to our hobbies - reading, walking and just spending time together. We were eating healthier meals, forcing ourselves to take real holidays. Family was always there - we just needed to go back into their fold for reassurance and tasty sugar-free and fibre-rich traditional meals. And we have discovered that there is a direct correlation between the sugar levels and the happiness levels...and medicines of course acting as catalysts.
